A TV marketing dude gets a well-deserved makeover from the Decor Demon team
Produced, designed, written and styled by Brian Patrick Flynn with photography by Sarah Dorio
Once upon a time there was a SuperDecorator known for helping others. He’d dash from house to house rescuing homeowners from life-or-death situations including: unfortunate wall colors, way-too-busy curtain fabrics and fluorescent lighting tragedies. Patrick Devine helps others by building them houses with his bare hands. SuperDecorator quickly re-branded as Decorator.
Although Decor Demon cannot save mankind, we can save the interiors of a kind man. During a routine bachelor pad scout, makeover candidate Patrick Devine was an easy sell. No talk of stripper poles or flat panels, but instead an insistence on paying it forward should his place be chosen. Not exactly what we expected from a jet-setting TV marketing expert. As if that weren’t enough, Patrick was amidst a toolbelt-slinging weekend with Habitat for Humanity. SOLD! Days later, the Decor Demon team whipped the Devine one’s embarassed-to-have-chicks-over condo into a sophisticated, bold habitat for insanity.
Meet George Jetson
After our design intervention, Patrick’s friend commented “It’s like George Jetson meets Frank Lloyd Wright” which is actually dead-on. Original resin art by artist David E. Peterson adds an element of menswear inspired pinstripe. IKEA’s KARLSTAD loveseat in Ullevi Gray was a budget-saver. Scarlett Loves Rhettro was our Atlanta source for the hand-made 1950′s coffee table, hexagonal side table and 1970′s chrome lamp. Patrick’s feet practically smile each time they grace the thick blue-grey rug from Lewis & Sheron Textiles. We flanked the sofa with a pair of TIRUP chairs from IKEA. Pillows in Duralee and Kravet fabrics were custom made by Custom Slipcover & Upholstery and J.Thomas Design.
In with the old
A corner off of the living room became an office nook thanks to a vintage desk and fan from Scarlett Loves Rhettro and the classic-modern Emeco Navy Chair from Design Within Reach. Poppy bird art from Avelino Pombo keeps an eye on suspicious passersby. To delineate this area from the adjoining living room, we added Toy Poodle FLOR tiles in Red Rover. The drywall was given a pale grey update with “Fog” by Porter Paints.
Urban cowboy
While we went a little bit country AND a little bit rock and roll with Patrick’s interiors, the dining room is certainly more of a rural experience. Stampede FLOR tiles in Black/White offer a decorative approach to FDA dairy requirements. Equestrian photography by Sarah Dorio mounted on Plexiglass brings a modern touch to a down-on-the-farm icon. Patrick dines on a JAMSUNDA table from IKEA and Danish modern chairs refinished in charcoal lacquer. Bold red pendants and vinyl upholstery take center stage thanks to the understated walls sporting PPG’s “Billowing Clouds”.
Drama king
Who knew craigslist could create so much drama? For a whopping $40, we picked up the previously shabby 1970′s era folding bar and baroque mirror. The bashful dude in the pink is my refinishing king, Brian Bell, who updates my diamonds-in-the-rough with super professional sprayed finishes. Is he happy to be credited for his hard work? Yes. Does he like being posted on the Interwebs in a pink shirt? No.
Don’t be afraid of the dark
The condo’s breakout star is its old-school hallway. To do it justice, we painted the walls black in an eggshell finish then added graphic, framed panels of handmade Blackbird wallpaper from Cavern Home. Our intentional blackout called for a bit of sparkle which is where Armstrong Metallaire ceiling tiles came in. Jackets and messenger bags pop a squat on the red Globus chair from Design Within Reach.
Poker facelift
Patrick’s bonus room wasn’t really a room nor did it have much of a bonus. We gave the 8X8 space a practical identity in the form of a game room. The lacquered table and chrome pendant were scored at a vintage store for less than $200. Design Within Reach supplied the Red Globus chairs. Country living strikes again in the form of photography from J.Thomas Fine Art.

sick place.
that dude’s gonna be swimming up fallopian tubes -yeah son.
